Performance Opportunities
Although I do not require students to participate in public performances, I do strongly encourage it. We learn a great deal from such experiences, even though they may make us feel temporarily uncomfortable or nervous. Piano performance teaches many important life skills, including:
Preparation: Learn what you need to do to feel well-prepared. Good preparation leads to confidence!
Concentration: Focus intently on the sounds you intend to create and listen intently to your playing. Concentration, along with careful preparation are two of the best ways to minimize performance anxiety.
Grace under pressure: Learn to cope with the unexpected. By its nature, performance is improvisatory and rarely goes exactly as planned. If you are well-prepared, confident, and focused, you will be able to respond to the unexpected with skill and grace.
In my studio, I offer a wide range of performance opportunities, from very casual small-group piano parties, to larger (but still very comfortable) studio recitals, to more formal recitals and adjudicated events. As a member of the Oregon Music Teachers' Association and the Oregon Federation of Music Clubs (as well as their national umbrella organizations), I provide my students with the opportunity to enter a range of adjudicated events to hone their performance skills. If you are interested in the details of these events, please speak with me or follow these links for more information:
