Studio Policies

I am delighted that you are considering joining my studio. I look forward to sharing a musical journey with you! Please review my policies and expectations so that you know what to expect regarding practicing, repertoire, maintaining your instrument, attendance and lesson fees. Don’t hesitate to contact me if you have any questions or concerns.

Practicing

Daily practice is an essential element in learning to play an instrument, so please plan on making piano practice a daily habit. I expect that my students practice at least 5 days each week. Length of practice sessions will vary depending on the individual student, but a good rule of thumb is that you should aim to practice each day for approximately the length of your weekly lesson. The more you practice, the faster your progress will be and the more enjoyment you will get out of your lessons.

Repertoire

My expertise is in the area of classical piano music, so most (but not necessarily all) of the pieces you will learn with me will be in the classical style. As pianists, we are fortunate to have a vast repertoire from which to choose. As my student, you can expect to be given a wide variety of music from which to choose your next piece.

Your Instrument

It is important that you have a piano that is in good working order on which to practice. You should plan to have your acoustic piano tuned and serviced at least once (preferably twice) each year. I am happy to recommend a registered piano technician if you do not already know one. A good-quality digital piano will suffice for the first year or two of lessons. After that, I strongly recommend that you invest in a good quality acoustic piano.

Attendance

Regular attendance at your lessons is expected. I understand that lessons will be missed now and then because of vacations, illness, sports or other commitments and am generally flexible about such absences. However, if a pattern of frequently missed lessons develops, I may suggest that lessons be discontinued.

Lesson Fees

Please contact me for current information regarding lesson fees. In general, payment is expected monthly based upon the number of lessons received that month. Fees include occasional group lessons, recitals and the option to participate in adjudicated events (Festivals & Syllabus). Please note that my fees do not include the entry fees to adjudicated events or the cost of printed music.
